Summary: There’s nothing better than admiring the sand and sea with the person you cherish most under the soft, pale light of the moon.
Author’s Note: Although I don’t have him listed as a main anymore, Cyrus still occupies a very significant place in my heart. I mean, I still feel the same about him as a I always did, even if he’s not on my mind as much/I’m not developing things for my selfship with him as actively. But damn, he’s still so beautiful and sweet and wonderful and amazing…and today is Octopath’s 2nd anniversary! So, while I didn’t originally plan on making anything for it, I’ve been thinking about Cyrus a bit more frequently and changed my mind to whip up this short and sweet little exchange. Thank you for reading!
The sky was clear and the moon was full, its pale glow serving as a brilliant centerpiece amidst countless clusters of shimmering stars…it was the kind of setting that took her breath away. She loved calm, quiet evenings like this; they tended to create moments and experiences she would’ve held onto for an eternity, if only she could. The gusts carried in on the current of the uneven waves were cool as they caressed her, promptly sweeping away any humidity or worries that happened to linger in her head longer than she liked. Here on the coast just outside of town, basking in the light of the moon’s ethereal visage while the tide ebbed and waned against the shore…there were few places she felt more safe and at ease. Then again, just being in a certain someone’s presence also had a similarly soothing effect on her.
“It’s quite impressive, isn’t it?” Well, speak of the devil. He must have been referring to the scenery as well, considering his eyes were already cast skyward when she turned to face him.
“I suppose it could lose its luster if you got too used to it,” she said with a shrug, unable to prevent a tiny smile from forming on her lips as he settled down beside her. “Especially in a small town like this. Where nothing ever happens, and there’s not that much to do.”
“I have to say, I’ve found my time here to be quite productive,” Cyrus replied, facing her with a smile that rivaled the moon’s modest radiance. “But I hope you haven’t been too disappointed with your visit?”
“No, of course not,” she reassured, patting his hand. “I think I’ve gotten all the adventuring out of my system for a while. Trekking across all eight territories…it’s been fun, of course, but exhausting.”
“I know what you mean,” he said with a chuckle. “But if you start getting antsy to go somewhere, you know you don’t have to stay? I’d be happy to--”
“We’ll go back to Atlasdam soon enough,” she cut in, leaning over to rest her head on his shoulder. “I don’t mind spending time here. It’s nice. And I’m glad you were finally able to see it for yourself, all the little things I love about this place. Even if it isn’t perfect, I’ve made some fond memories…I certainly don’t intend to abandon it forever.”
“I think that would be wise.” He draped an arm around her shoulders, drawing her closer. “I’ve honestly quite enjoyed every moment of my time here. Despite my occupation, I haven’t encountered many opportunities to gain any hands on experience with the world until I met you. I should thank you for expanding my horizons.”
“Then I should certainly thank you for the same,” she replied, peeking up at him through her lashes. “I never would have been able to pursue my magic studies, or even consider dipping my toes into apothecary work, if it wasn’t for you. I’m grateful for everyone we met along the way, of course…but most of all, I’m glad you let me stay with you.”
“I wanted you to,” he answered simply, nuzzling one of her ears. “And I still do. Never in my life did I expect to meet anyone I’d actually feel a sense of loss without, but life is usually quite adept at proving us wrong, isn’t it? I suppose I had even more discoveries to make about myself and the wider world than I originally anticipated.”
“And are you happy with that? I mean, do you regret having your eyes opened to all these things?”
“Hardly,” he chuckled again, pressing a soft kiss to her hair. “Even though not all of my initial expectations were met, and new expectations arose, I wouldn’t take back any of the experiences I had on that extensive journey of ours.”
“Well, there are definitely some things I would have changed,” she replied, leaning into his touch. “I wish we could have done more to help people, to save them, to mitigate their suffering--”
“We did all we could.” He swept some of her hair out of her face, and she shivered as his fingers traced the curve of her face. “The ones we couldn’t save were always out of our hands, unfortunately. There’s only so much we could do. But you shouldn’t dwell on those things.”
“I know,” she sighed. “And I’m glad I have you to remind me of that. A lot of bad things may have happened, but just as many good things happened…if not more. As long as you’re around to help me chase those kinds of thoughts away, I know I can deal with them, and maybe even get strong enough to leave them behind.”
“I’ll always be by your side,” he murmured, his tone making her shiver. “As long as you’ll have me.”
She snuggled against him, settling her head in the crook of his neck. “And I’ll always want you, for as long as I live.”
“I suppose we should both plan on living quite a long time, together, then,” he suggested with a smile.
