Summary: Nova can’t help dozing off on something soft and comfortable when it makes itself available…even if that thing happens to be another person.
*Author’s Note*: This is just a sap fic, plain and simple. A while back I thought of a hc for me using Nishiki’s tail as a pillow, and a day or two after I found out that there was actually an official comic about that exact scenario featuring Azura. I don’t usually give a lot of credence to canon when it comes to my selfshipping, but I couldn’t help feeling a little validated lol. I wrote another fic with a similar title to this (with Saruhiko) but in this case it was just too good to pass up, so I just repurposed it again. Sorry for the confusion orz and I hope you enjoy!
“Are you feeling alright? You look at little tired.”
“Well, it’s probably because I am a little tired.”
Nova’s response wasn’t as sarcastic as one might expect; her true intent was to ease his concern. The kitsune chief greeted her with a lighthearted smile as he settled himself on the soft, springy grass by her side. “If that’s the case, why aren’t you back in the village resting?”
“I just wanted to go out for a bit,” she explained, lightly kicking her feet in the clear water at the river’s edge. “It’s sunny today, but not too intense. The tree’s help keep things cool and shaded, and sitting by the river is always so calming. Listening to the symphony of the forest and the flow of the water, it’s so serene…”
Glancing around the clearing, it would have been easy for Nova to get lost in her thoughts. Varied, striking shades of green blanketed the ground and bushes and trees, swaths of color from numerous other types of foliage standing out and adding their own unique flair. The gurgling and babbling of the river filled the air, accompanied by the typical noises of nature that somehow took on a new life in the context of this scene. Everything here belonged to a hidden mountain getaway, a hamlet in the hills that had gone from serving as her refuge to welcoming her as a home.
The people were what truly made it feel familiar and comforting, rather than the location itself, but she hadn’t expected to find anything of the like when she’d first fled into this dark and twisting wilderness. The eerie blue flames that’d blinded her and protected her on the night that she was saved flashed through her mind, the night she’d expected she might never see another sunrise. Now she saw the sunrise every day, in more ways than one, and she couldn’t help being mildly thankful for the hardships that had unknowingly delivered her to this secluded paradise.
“Your words paint quite a picture,” he teased, and her eyes shifted to his face. “I’ll admit, it is quite charming and peaceful out here.”
“Then maybe you should spend some more time here, too,” she suggested, her expression turning thoughtful. “It could help distract you from all the clutter you’ve usually got clouding your mind. All the responsibilities and duties and worries you silently let pile up.”
“Is that what my mind is really like?” his tone was even more playful now. “I’d like to know how you became such a gifted mind reader.”
“Well, I mean…” Embarrassed, her gaze returned to the rippling water. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to assume.”
Brushing his tail under her chin, he coaxed her to look at him again. His fur was always so silky and warm, almost feathery, meticulously cared for and groomed. It was one of his proudest features, and she’d since come to appreciate it to a similar degree. She couldn’t help trailing after it a bit, wanting to enjoy the pleasant sensation as long as possible. “I didn’t say that to be mean or put you down. It was just a joke, although I am genuinely sorry if I upset you. I appreciate that you worry for me, and I promise I’ll always do my best not to let myself get too overwhelmed.”
“Even if you do, I’ll always be here to help you,” Nova vowed, placing a hand over his. He flipped it over and laced their fingers together, his face lighting up with a tender, affectionate smile. His brilliance had always outshined the sun in her eyes, striking enough to knock the wind out of her in an instant. But it didn’t really bother her that she was constantly being beguiled by his effortless charisma and wit. Meeting him was probably the best thing that had ever happened to her, when she thought about it. And nowadays, she was almost always thinking about him.
“So, did you wander out here just to find me?” she inquired, scooting closer to him.
“Well, I can’t help but feel a little lost when I don’t have you by my side,” he admitted with a hint of sincerity in his tone. “I’ve become so used to expecting to see you when I look around, it almost makes me panic when I realize you’re not there.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”
“I just like being near you,” he soothed before she could transition into any speeches of unnecessary remorse or regret. “I just didn’t know where you’d gone, and I wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.”
“I’ll be sure to tell you next time,” she promised, fingers curling around his hand.
“You don’t have to give me specifics, just the general vicinity or whatever would be nice,” he clarified. “Just so if something happens, I’ll know where to start looking.”
“I like to think you trained me better than that,” she replied as she cast her eyes to the ground. “Enough that I can handle myself in the event of an emergency. But I know, I know. You do think that, it’s just a precaution in case something unexpected happens.”
He trailed his fingers through her hair with his free hand. “I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you. But you’re right, I’m probably being a little silly. Overprotective, unrealistic.”
“It’s sweet to know you care.” She smiled, adjusting herself so she could take his tail in her hands. “Thank you for coming out and looking for me, especially when I know you’ve already got plenty of other matters to attend to.”
“The real tragedy is that I haven’t had much time for grooming today,” he lamented, swishing his fluffy limb further into her arms. “If you’d be so kind as to assist me?”
She knew he was mostly kidding, but she wasn’t going to turn down an opportunity to indulge in his velvet coat some more. Much like he’d touched her hair a minute ago, she began combing her fingers through his fur, petting and untangling and stroking it. Sitting here in the middle of the woods, surrounded by nothing but the picturesque sight of the riverside scenery and the melody of life that was carried through the air, Nishiki started to gain a better understanding of where Nova had been coming from earlier. The setting was so gentle and calm, a masterpiece of nature that anyone would be lucky to experience. He opened his mouth to share his observation, realizing before a word could form on his tongue that the movement of her hands through his fur had ceased.
Peeking over his shoulder, he caught sight of the young girl dozing peacefully on top of his tail. Employing it as a makeshift pillow, he couldn’t help being amused by her sleeping form. Head cushioned atop the most voluminous tuft, her arms were wound around it, fingers tangled in its strands as an extra measure of security. She wasn’t interested in letting her sleeping spot go any time soon, and he supposed that meant he was at her mercy for the time being. He could certainly think of worse places to be stuck, secretly happy to find her clinging to him like a monkey to a tree. He let his mind wander while he had some time to himself, figuring it couldn’t hurt, and that taking the advice she’d given him was probably a wise thing to do. He leaned back on his arms and basked in the sun’s pleasant warmth, savoring the sensation of her weight settled against him.
