Startling

Word Count: 707

Summary: A prompt from this ask on my blog!

*Author’s Note*: Hghengesg idk who sent this last night but it inspired me to try to whip up a quick little Valentine’s themed thing for Saruhiko. I already had things for Ren (even if it was repurposed) and Cyrus so…I figured why not lol. And actually finishing a fic prompt in a timely fashion, who knew I was capable of it! I hope you enjoy!

“Here, this is for you.”

She wished she didn’t have to rush the delivery, but there was no helping all the other business they had on their hands. For this organization, today was like any other day, minus the fact that some of the members seemed a little giddier than usual. That was an impressive feat for a few of them, a surprise to find that they were capable of having such sides to them at all. Nova knew they weren’t going to have a lot of time to themselves, if any, but she’d still done her best to come up with something special just so he knew she was thinking of him. She didn’t want to lump him in with everyone else, because he wasn’t just anyone else to her.

“When did you find the time for this?” He examined the modest parcel with reservation, and she couldn’t tell if it was because he was disappointed or just didn’t know how to react. Both reasons were equally likely.

“That’s not a very appropriate way to respond to a gift,” she huffed, her agitation exacerbated by the anxiety his lack of enthusiasm inspired. “It’s not important when I found the time. And it’s not like I didn’t have to make some for everyone else, anyway.”

“Did you?” He sounded more impressed than resentful.

“Well, yeah, do you really think I wouldn’t hear the end of it if I didn’t?” They were getting off track. “But that doesn’t mean I didn’t think of something to make yours special.”

His expression shifted into a perplexing combination of skepticism and interest. She seized the opportunity as he took a breath, a prelude to the question he was preparing to pose. Tugging him down just enough that she could reach—curse the fact that he made it so difficult to conduct such actions deftly or discreetly just by nature of his stature—she caressed his face in her hands and captured his lips in the sweetest kiss she could muster in the moment. It still felt embarrassing, and rushed, and out of place, but she wasn’t really keen on waiting all day to give it to him, either. Knowing their job, it was unlikely they’d manage to make it to the end of the day without having to face some sort of disruptive calamity. And knowing herself, she was confident that such a situation would sour her mood and ruin any motivation she may have had to carry out even a simple gesture like this later on.

She could tell he was trying to form a proper response, but as she drew away, he struggled to materialize a coherent thought out of the hazy wasteland his mind had become. Predictably, his face was enveloped in a deep shade of red, which clashed with practically every other aspect of his present appearance. She thought it was cute, but decided against voicing her thought in the event it only made it more difficult for him to recover his composure. She wasn’t sure what she could possibly do to improve the situation she’d created at this point, but the sound of frantic footsteps in the halls nearby was enough to nudge her into action.

“Alright, c’mon, don’t act like I’ve never done that before.”

“That doesn’t make it any less startling,” he defended as his senses slowly returned.

“You can be as startled as you want when we don’t have things to do.” She coaxed him to slip the gift into one of the inner pockets of his coat before taking his hand.

“So you’re telling me you made something for everyone else…”

“Because it’s kind of mandatory. Or at least considerate. But I shouldn’t have to tell you that no one else got a kiss like that.”

He wanted to reply with something witty, but her blunt reminder almost set him out of sorts again. Squeezing her hand to acknowledge his thanks, he followed her lead as they both ventured back into the thick of things. Going their separate ways for the day, neither of them felt like they were really that far apart. No matter how vast the distance, they could always feel the other’s heart beating soundly next to their own.
