Summary: He’s as devious and dangerous as the shadows, but also just as intriguing. Despite her better judgment, she knows that one day that temptation is sure to prove her downfall.

*Author’s Note*: This piece is kind of vague (I feel like that’s been happening a lot lately >.>) and I’m sorry about that. I started writing it like three different times and just couldn’t decide what direction I wanted to take it in…before finally settling on this direct but not so detailed approach. Taken from this prompt list (and I even used an extra one…you can try to figure out which one it is if you want lol.) It’s obvious from the message (that I got on my blog where this prompt is from) that I have my friend to thank for this and she knew what she was doing when she suggested it. Normally I’d be too self conscious to post something like this but it’s my last fic for the month, I’ve really been feeling this new f/o, and in the spirit of Halloween I figured I might as well go all out. I also don’t know where they’re supposed to be exactly but there’s a fireplace and that’s all that mattered to me lol.

“You look good enough to eat.”

“Is that supposed to be some kind of joke?”

Nova could tell from his tone that it wasn’t, but she was compelled to confront him with the question all the same.

“Why would I joke about something like that?” he replied, lighthearted and innocent. His cheek rested on his hand, which was propped up against the arm of his chair. His posture exuded an air of effortless indifference.

Why wouldn’t you. She thought to herself, trying to decipher the nature of his perplexing intentions. Surely he didn’t mean to hurt her…well, she could hope. But she also couldn’t see how that particular course of action would possibly benefit him in the long run. Her head was already growing foggy with confusion. “Because I can’t fathom what your implication would be if you actually meant it. Is that really what you wanted to see me about?”

“Would it matter?” he persisted with his enigmatic charade, and the unwavering conviction with which he spoke started to make her uneasy. “It could always be the topic I wish to discuss now.”

He rose from his seat and she was reflexively compelled to take a step back. The room was dark, shrouded in an empty void of shadows that she could sink into at any moment, become one with the night if she so desired. That special ability of hers had proven indispensable on numerous occasions, although she was kind of hoping he wouldn’t force her to employ it now. The glowing flicker of the fireplace he’d been staring into was the only thing that kept the darkness from shallowing the room whole…maybe he’d been admiring the flames, or contemplating his own schemes. She’d never been perceptive enough to understand the true depth of what really went on in his mind. The uneven flames lashed and popped, successfully contained behind the barrier of the hearth’s iron cage. Restraining the blazing display, the metalwork seemed almost flimsy in comparison to the beast it stifled.

She wanted to argue, to point out that she had more important things to do if he was just going to play mind games with her like this. But of course, she had nowhere else to be, and nothing else to be doing outside of entertaining his casual, often nonsensical whims. Normally she didn’t mind her lack of agenda which existed for the sole purpose of accommodating whatever he happened to have in store for her. However, as he was so arrogantly demonstrating at the moment, there were times when she wasn’t sure if it was safe for her to allow herself to remain so vulnerable in his grasp.

“Just one bite…” His tone crackled with static like a disrupted broadcast, and she lurched forward away from the voice that’d suddenly materialized beside her. Although he hadn’t made any contact with her the sting of his teeth and the prod of his claws were almost palpable enough for her to feel their phantasmal presence on her skin. She wasn’t the only one who could manipulate or inhabit the darkness, and this certainly wasn’t the way she wanted to be reminded of that little fact.

She spun around and involuntarily shoved his face away, forcing him back while barely avoiding the urge to apply her claws. It wasn’t like she would have done much damage to him, or that any damage she happened to do wouldn’t simply heal in a manner of minutes, if not sooner…it was the principle of the thing. Perhaps she should have taken the opportunity to punish him for his misconduct, subsequently teach him a lesson about startling her like that. But ultimately, she knew it wouldn’t stick anyway, and that he’d be right back to doing whatever he wanted after the dust settled and his confidence that he could get away with it returned.

“Quit being creepy!” she snapped, putting some distance between them again. “Be serious! If you just called me here because you wanted to mess with me, I don’t have any obligation to--”

He chuckled in amusement and her ears flattened in dismay, her patience growing thinner by the second. Before she could continue berating him for his irritating taunts, he reached out and gently stroked her face. She shivered and the heat of her agitation ebbed as if this simple gesture was all it took to soothe it away. The lightest touch with hands that were stained with so much misery and madness; the very thought sent another bone chilling tremor through her. As regrettable as it may have been, these also happened to be hands that she loved, that belonged to a person that she loved. He didn’t deserve the unconditional approval she so generously granted him, but he knew she’d never revoke it, and so did she. Against her better judgment she let her cheek melt into his hand, appreciating the subtle, signature sensation of his surprisingly tender caress.

“You’re right, I was merely joking,” he confessed, the shine of his eyes and sheen of his disconcerting grin the only details she could clearly distinguish from the shadows. “I apologize for unsettling you.”

“You didn’t unsettle me.” She knew it was a weak defense, but it wasn’t like she had anything better to supply. She turned her face away, though he was faster, capturing her chin in his grasp to lock her gaze in place. “It’s just…when you tell me you want to discuss business, that’s what I come prepared to do. So I expect you to stick to that, especially if it’s something serious enough for you to summon me in the first place.”

What she was saying didn’t make a lot of sense, and obviously wasn’t true, but she was desperately searching for anything she could use to belay her embarrassment. He saw right through her, of course, but decided it was probably better not to push his luck. The sting of her disappointment usually outweighed the satisfaction he found in seeing her so flustered, out of her element. There would be plenty of time for more of that later, anyway; it wasn’t like either of them were going anywhere any time soon.
