Summary: Enjoying the stunning view of the sunset with someone you love is one of life’s simple pleasures, and Nova and Raymond have learned how to take advantage of that particular pastime on their quiet, tranquil tropical locale.
Author’s Note: This is my first Animal Cr0ssing fic and I’m honestly a little anxious to post it, but I worked hard on it so I’m going through with it anyway lol. I actually came up with the idea for this one (which isn’t much of an idea to begin with orz) because I’ve been getting depressed seeing some negative stuff on twitter...so I kind of put this piece together to make myself feel a little better. I know Raymond is super popular and kind of controversial but I just like him as a character…he’s cute and sweet and charming and funny and anyway this is how I’d spend my evenings with him if I could T^T I hope you enjoy!
Sunlight danced on the caps of the rolling waves as they broke against the soft, warm sand, making the water’s surface shimmer and sparkle like starlight. It wouldn’t be long before the fiery expanse above was replaced in a similar way, plunged into darkness with only scarce pinpricks of illumination to pierce the shadows of the night. The moon would bathe the island in its pale, gentle glow from shore to shore, and if the inhabitants were lucky enough, perhaps a few stars would even happen to fall before their eyes. Nova wiggled her toes in the sand, watching as the granules shifted and settled around her, adapting to her movement. Although she preferred the mild, cooler weather of the fall and winter months, she’d been learning how to appreciate this tropical climate from a new perspective ever since she’d taken up residence on this once deserted island paradise.
“Something on your mind?”
The gray cat sitting beside her squeezed her hand, and she raised her eyes to meet his as a tender smile graced her lips. She’d never tire of playing with the modest swoop of blonde hair that curled around his forehead, or rubbing his striking black ears whenever he seemed stressed. The multi-colored irises that she’d grown so fond of were so familiar, so comforting. She’d never tire of looking at them, either, or knowing that they were just as content to look at (and even admire) her. It almost seemed as if they gleamed with a blaze of their own, stoked by a subtle joy that subsequently filled her chest with a profound happiness she’d come to rely on. A contentment that she’d never managed to experience anywhere else. With anyone else. But she never failed to find it when she was with him.
“I’m just thinking about how nice this is…all of this,” the black cat answered, gesturing to their picturesque surroundings. “How nice everything’s been. I mean, there’ve been some ups and downs, some obstacles and struggles here and there, but that’s just life, you know?”
“Yeah, I know the feeling,” her gray companion concurred with a nod.
“You can’t have the good without the bad,” Nova continued. “But I have to say, the good has always outweighed the bad ever since I came here. It’s been refreshing, but also a little surprising. I never really expected all of this to be as nice and fun as it has been. I wouldn’t trade it, any of it, for the world.”
“I’m glad it’s been such a positive experience for you.” Raymond smiled, looking down as he felt her furry fingers slot between his.
“I hope it’s been the same, or at least somewhat similar, for you,” she prodded, tightening her grip.
“Of course!” he assured with a more enthusiastic nod. “I wouldn’t have moved here if I didn’t think this was the right place for me. But it is. It has been, and I’m sure it always will be. I may not have left behind as much as some of the others, and I may not be able to contribute as much as they can, either…but as long as you and all the other wonderful friends I’ve made stick around, I don’t see why I’d ever want to leave. As long as you don’t mind having me, that is.”
“Are you kidding?” She threw her arms around his shoulders, smothering him in a heartfelt embrace. “I love having you here! I love…you. In general. I’m so glad I got to meet you, so glad that of all the places you could have ended up, this was where you decided to stay. Thank you…not just for staying, but for making this entire experience even more wonderful than I ever could have hoped for.”
“C’mon, you’re gonna get me all teary if you keep saying stuff like that,” Raymond chuckled, a minor tremor in his tone. “I love you, too. I hope you know that. And I’m not even that amazing. You’re the one that’s been doing all the hard work around here. It seems like all I can do is encourage you and get you gifts every now and then, little things I think you’d like.”
“And that’s more than enough,” Nova reassured, settling her head on his shoulder. “Really, it is. Even if you don’t think so. You don’t need to think so, really…only I need to. And everything I do for you, and everyone else, and this island…I mean, it’s all still kind of for me, too. I want to do everything I can to make this a nice place to live, to make this a place where everyone can be happy and enjoy themselves. And I want everyone, including you, to know how much you’re appreciated, how much you mean to me!”
He slipped his arms around her, cradling her to his chest as the waves crept up just enough to tickle the tips of their feet. “Well, you know I’m always here to support you, and to help out any way I can. We all are. We want to help make this place a pleasant place to live for you, too, as much as you want to make it nice for everyone else.”
“Just sticking around, supporting me, being here for me is plenty,” she reiterated, giving him a light peck on the cheek as her dark tail twisted around his. He smiled and cupped her face, tilting it up just enough to give her a proper kiss.
Her first instinct was to pull away, but she’d been getting better at fighting that kind of self isolating response. Instead, she chose to melt into his arms (and the kiss), pushing him until they both flopped onto their backs. Such flamboyant displays of affection usually made her anxious, drowning her in embarrassment, but she also found herself drawn to them. She wanted to demonstrate her fondness for him and even the rest of the world to see. She cherished him with her whole heart, and that same heart was apparently eager to ensure such sentiments weren’t only known, but plainly shared. Although they both weren’t particularly extroverted in the first place, the influence of their budding emotions helped them adjust to these new and slightly daunting behaviors.
Nuzzled against his chest, she adjusted herself so she was lounging more on him than the sandy bank beneath them. He draped an arm around her shoulders and held her happily, looking just in time to catch a glimpse of the few fading rays of the sunset. It was a truly peaceful, exquisite, striking scene, and anyone would have probably considered themselves quite lucky to see it. Raymond was no exception, but for him, the true highlight of the moment was knowing that he got to share it with the girl he’d come to treasure more than he ever thought he could care for someone.
It wasn’t necessarily that he wasn’t interested in that type of thing, but rather that he’d never really had any opportunities to see what it was like. Nova was in the same boat, and occasionally found herself questioning if this was all just some wonderful dream she would eventually be forced to awaken from. Whether it was a dream or reality, she was just happy to have any of this at all, and the details couldn’t have been less important to her. All that really mattered was that she was here, with him, and they were both content to share the simple gift of one another’s presence.
“Thank you for being here with me, and making my days here truly memorable, truly marvelous,” she murmured as she closed her eyes, listening to the ambiance of the sea and its salty breeze.
“Thank you for allowing me to do so at all,” he replied, nuzzling the tip of her ear.
They turned their gazes to the sky as the first few stars made their appearance. So magical, so wonderful, and they could do things like this every day. It was amazing to think that such things were possible, and yet here they were, experiencing it all in person. Who knew what kind of exciting adventures or amusing exchanges they’d have the next day, and all the ones that came after? It was a mystery, but that was just part of the fun. The only constant they needed was each other, and they couldn’t fathom anything that might possibly come between them. Instead, they preferred to ponder about what they had to look forward to on the cusp of the next new horizon.
