Summary: Hot tea or coffee is usually more than enough to help them greet the morning, and sometimes it even serves as a catalyst for the host of playful shenanigans that have become amusingly commonplace between them.

*Author’s Note*: I’ve been wanting to write something like this for forever but I just never got around to it. Now I finally have! It kind of trailed off into…something I didn’t expect in the end, with Nova getting pissy over nothing, but…I kind of liked how it played out, idk, if that’s what came out while I was writing it I felt like it was just natural and good enough to leave it. So this fic kind of veers off halfway through into something I wasn’t anticipating, and I’m sorry for that, but I still think it’s sweet and good. I miss writing things for me and Saruhiko T^T hopefully I’ll have more ideas and time to do that soon, but until then here’s this humble offering. I hope you enjoy!

When she’d first started working for this distinguished supernatural police force, mornings were practically always hectic and wild. The flow was hard to keep up with as people bobbed and weaved and dashed through the halls, all rushing to get to their respective stations on time. Sometimes, things still turned out that way, especially when emergencies arose. But her experience had also exponentially settled and improved, and she could attribute most of that improvement to one simple individual. First of all, even when he was stressed, he usually did his best to conceal it. Even if you could see the agitation and exhaustion in his eyes, he never wavered in his pace, and completed every assignment he was tasked with on time, if not a little sooner. That disciplined nature of his helped influence her own routine, as well as the fact that he was her primary superior. She learned quickly that if she didn’t answer to him in the manner he expected, she was sure to face a barrage of consequences that she swiftly became eager to avoid at all costs.

The nature of their partnership was the second most significant influence on her habits. Since she’d joined this organization, they’d become practically inseparable, and in spending so much time in one another’s company, she was naturally forced to adapt to his pace. She hadn’t adhered to any significant kind of regimen in her previous way of life, so adopting his was essentially her only option short of him discarding his agenda all together. That possibility was unviable in their positions, though, and following his lead was a decision she’d made of her own volition, a transformation she’d undergone in order to stay with him just that little bit longer. Although it wasn’t exactly sanctioned activity, no one was going to object or get in the way of their practice of spending almost every night together. They slept better that way, which was an objective benefit, but also just didn’t feel a need to stray that far from each other’s sides for those few uneventful hours of the night.

Chances were that they’d be working together again in the morning or had been working together through the previous evening, anyway, so staying together made things easier for their plans. It was both a relief and a gift to wake up next to each other, tangled in an interlocking embrace as whoever had stirred first appreciated the serenity of their partner’s sleeping form. The thought that it was one of the only times Fushimi looked sincerely unburdened had crossed Nova’s mind on several occasions, but happiness had become more common in his expression ever since they’d taken the plunge and confessed their vulnerable feelings to one another. Sometimes she liked to take advantage of those quiet moments and trace his lips with a finger, or carefully comb a hand through his bangs, or examine the dark, unmistakable mark that boldly displayed itself on his chest. For his part he enjoyed just getting to glimpse the beauty of her serene countenance, occasionally taking the opportunity to caress her hair or ears or face.

After the calm of their post wake up haze had faded, they were usually quite diligent about getting ready for the day. Knowing that most of the time they would be going their separate ways to carry out their work put a bit of hamper on things, but it only made another ritual they conducted even more meaningful as well. On the mornings when there were no urgent tasks to be dealt with, no disorder or chaos sending people into a panic as they scrambled to determine what to do next, they took their time enjoying a warm cup of something soothing to help them shake off any lingering vestiges of drowsiness. Nova couldn’t stand the bitter taste of Fushimi’s beverage of choice, repeatedly illustrating just how betrayed she felt by the pleasant and misleading aroma it emitted and opting for a hot cup of tea in its stead.

Sometimes they’d enjoy their drinks as they snuggled together in whoever’s room they happened to have lodged in the previous night. Other times they had to take their drinks with them in a rush, which kind of spoiled the experience, but they were grateful for the caffeine if nothing else. On this particular morning, they were seated together in the usual meeting room, waiting for their fellow squad mates to arrive. Nova’s eyes wandered up and down Fushimi’s form as her fingers tapped absently against the warm ceramic nestled between her palms. The idea of her boyfriend employing one of his lesser known abilities to keep his own drink warm randomly drifted through her mind, eliciting a chuckle from her lips. Eyes shifting from the report he’d been glancing over to her amused smile, he wondered what could have possibly seemed so entertaining to her. He pushed the laptop to the side and turned to face her directly, and she hid her mouth behind her mug as she took a sip.

“Did I do something funny?” he asked innocently, and she shook her head before stifling another quiet laugh.

“No, no, I’m sorry. I was just thinking…about something stupid. And funny.”

Propping an arm against the table, his sharp eyes regarded her with curiosity. “Would you mind enlightening me on the subject?”

“I just thought it would be funny if you used your Aura to heat up your drink,” she explained sheepishly. “But it just seems even more ridiculous now that you’ve made me say it out loud.”

“I feel like some of the guys would be almost offended if they heard you talk about their power that way,” he teased, and she was pleased to see the lighthearted glint in his eye. It was the kind of expression she and many others used to believe he was incapable of making. “I’ll admit, I’ve never thought about using it that way myself.”

“That’s probably a good thing,” Nova admitted with a nod. “I mean, it’s not supposed to be used for petty stuff like that. If the Captain knew any of us tried to use our powers for something that frivolous, he’d probably curate a punishment that would properly illustrate what our abilities are supposed to be used for and why. In a way that the perpetrator would certainly never forget, no matter how much they wish they could.”

Fushimi smirked and downed the dregs of his drink. “Want to take bets on who you think we could implicate for that sort of thing first?”

“No, that’s not what I’m suggesting!” she scoffed, finishing her own. “And I wouldn’t advise you to make any plans like that, you know they’ll backfire before you can even finish the preparations.”

“That sounds more like a challenge than a threat,” he said with a smile, folding his hands under his chin.

“Look, if you want to get yourself in trouble, be my guest. Just don’t expect me to take any part in it,” she stated curtly, feeling even more immature and absurd for allowing the conversation to continue this far in the first place.

“You know I’m not serious,” he replied with a roll of his eyes. “Besides, I only use that part of my power for important things—” She was about to ask him to list a few examples, but he got ahead of her as he leaned over and pressed an abnormally warm kiss to her cheek. “—like that.”

Reflexively slapping her hand over the spot, her face took on the shade of a strawberry, fur fluffing up as if it’d actually been exposed to some form of steam. “That’s so—! I just, I can’t believe you! I can’t believe you did something like that, that you would pull something like that—!”

“Really? Even after all this time? I’m not sure if I’m more appalled or offended,” he continued playfully, and his nonchalant demeanor only seemed to fluster her more.

“Oh, just shut up,” she huffed as she tried to compose herself. “I just think it’s reckless since we are waiting for some people to arrive—”

“That’s never seemed to bother you before.”

Now he was just provoking her outright, but a rebellious wave from within compelled her to keep him from having the last laugh. Rising from her seat, she grabbed him by the collar and yanked him close enough to retaliate with a much more aggressive kiss. Although part of it was just a response of her frustration at being taunted, in the midst of her response she silently berated herself for going overboard. If she’d had a problem with his harmless little display, then the forceful reaction she was exhibiting now was truly inexcusable. There was no taking it back, of course, and whatever feeling of calm that may have been present during their short break before the briefing was resolutely diminished.

“It is way too easy to mess with you, you know that?” he commented with a self-satisfied grin that she simultaneously adored and despised. “But I won’t push anymore, since you’re right, we could be disturbed at any moment.”

As if on cue, the sound of amused snickering could be heard from the hall. It wasn’t rare for them to get caught in situations like this, or for the onlooking parties to eavesdrop on the happenings until they ended on their own or the presence of said eavesdroppers was exposed. In this case, it was obviously the latter situation, and Nova simply returned to her seat and attempted to suppress her mortification. It was yet another morning filled with exchanges that had become commonplace in their lives, a routine that played out as regularly as their lungs filled with air. Passing time over a cup of coffee or tea, content to just enjoy each other’s company even when petty agitation seemed to creep between them. Really, they were both just so relieved to be happy and loved…even if sometimes the love they felt left them helplessly overwhelmed.
