Word Count: 725
Summary: Although they may not be huge fans of the summer heat, the one thing they can’t deny is that no matter how hot it gets, it’s still hard to be averse to being close to one another.
*Author’s Note*: This is one of my first warm up prompts, which basically just means it’s shorter than usual. I like to aim for at least 1000 words when I write stuff, which may not seem like a lot, but especially when I’m not feeling the best it can be quite the struggle. I haven’t written properly in about a month, mostly because, again, I haven’t been feeling the best, so I did a couple of these shorter prompts to try and get the gears turning again. Also, Saruhiko and I aren’t very fond of warm weather, and since it’s summer where I live, I decided to vent some of my frustrations a bit lol. I hope you enjoy!
Nova hugged Saruhiko’s arm as they strolled along, cheek glued to his warm skin, fingers dimpling the surface where they curled in against it. Her gaze occasionally lingered on the people passing by, but only in fleeting curiosity, like when something flashy or distinct flickers in the corner of your eye. The air was overwhelmed with suffocating sunlight as they meandered through the city, taking refuge in the shade of whatever buildings or people they could employ. Each inhale felt more like a curse than a relief, only serving to replace the breath that was heated from within with more of the same unpleasant air. Getting used to—or at least putting up with—hot weather was just another part of being human, although Nova supposed it would have been better if she framed that observation in a different, less hyperbolic way.
She knew they’d probably be more comfortable if she wasn’t clinging to him like a monkey, but her desire to be close to him remained stubbornly pronounced even with the obnoxious presence of the smothering heat. It was quite a remarkable feat for anyone or anything to override her need for personal space or better air circulation, especially in circumstances like this. She found it mildly amusing that being near him in this capacity only really served to make things worse for both of them, but despite such evidence no reason proved persuasive enough to make her change her mind. She usually tried not to be so clingy, since it often made him uncomfortable, and she didn’t want to get on his nerves. He could be especially irritable about it in public, but today it seemed that the weather had taken most of the fight out of him. There was no doubt in her mind that the right spark would be all it took to restore his exasperation and indignance to full potency.
“I wish it could always be like this.”
“Really? I sure as hell don’t,” his tone dripped with a mixture of perturbance and incredulity. “What in the world would ever make you say that? Especially with weather like this. Remind me why I so foolishly allowed you to convince me to—”
“You.”
That single statement was enough to make his heart do a somersault. The words he’d been planning to reply with froze in his throat. He coughed a few times and he adjusted his glasses, keeping his face angled away to ensure she wouldn’t be able to glimpse his features from her position no matter how hard she tried. She giggled to herself and squeezed his arm in comfort, although regrettably her actions only seemed capable of making his face warmer by the second. At least in this case he could blame his rosiness on the heat if he felt so inclined, but ideally, he would have preferred not to get any warmer than he already was.
The sweltering temperature and the stuffy, crowded streets were more than enough to make him miserable and remind him why he was usually so dead set on staying inside most of the time; especially when summer rolled around. Anything was better than facing this kind of torture. Then again, the weight on his arm that shouldn’t have been able to contribute much more than discomfort had instead facilitated the opposite effect. Although not necessarily in a physical sense, having her close to him in any way did seem to stave off some of his more ill-tempered thoughts.
“C’mon, let’s just find this place so we can get out of this damn heat.”
On the hunt for a small, secluded café on the recommendation of one of their comrades, the pair had made the rare decision to actually do something with their free time when it finally came around again. Neither of them was too keen on going out and about in general, much less on a scorching summer day, and even less with the intent to explore the maze of the bustling downtown metropolis that was practically always overflowing with people. All the odds seemed stacked against them, but even in the least agreeable of circumstances, just being together was enough to make things tolerable. It seemed silly, but they really didn’t care where they were or what they did, as long as they got to spend time with one another.
