Summary: Beach days aren’t really their thing, but when they’re together, everything becomes at least a little bit more enjoyable.

Author’s Note: My first personal entry for F/O February, and it’s not even that exciting lol. I’ve been writing some things for my friends for the other days, and I plan on continuing to do that for any of the prompts I feel fit their selfships better than my own. It’s funny, because I really suck at coming up with scenarios for beach related prompts, considering the beach isn’t really my favorite place to vacation, but as demonstrated in this fic, I can usually find something to like about it if I have my f/o(s) there to make things a little more bearable u.u
__________

“C’mon, are you guys gonna get in the water or not?”

“At least get up and play some volleyball with us!”

“Look at this neat crab I found--GAH.”

With the last hauntingly finite plea from their comrades, Nova closed her eyes and rested her head on Fushimi’s shoulder. They were curled up together under a beach umbrella with a fluffy towel beneath them, decked out in the usual swimming attire, although Fushimi had insisted on keeping a light jacket on as well. The young woman knew her boyfriend wasn’t keen on beach days, or most outdoor activities in general. They required too much effort, he burned too easily, and he wasn’t the most ardent proponent of group outings in the first place.

Somehow their coworkers, fellow operatives and friends, had managed to coax them out of the dorms long enough to attempt to spend a laid back day at the beach. Which, of course, meant it would probably turn out to be the furthest thing from that. That is to say, the Captain had summoned them for the excursion, and they were going to be dragged along despite any reservations they may have had.

“Aren’t you going to go join them?” Fushimi asked, and Nova glanced up at him without moving from her position. “No one likes the water more than you.”

“Yeah, but I prefer it under different circumstances,” she explained. “Hot days baking under the sun aren’t really my thing. If I wanted to make it to the water right now, I’d have to hop across the hot sand, which would most likely burn my feet. I’d have to watch out for crabs and anything else lurking just below the surface that could pop out at any second, which I’m not particularly fond of. I don’t mind passing the time right here next to you. Honestly, I’d say I’m probably having a better time right where I am.”

“And you’re not just saying that?” he probed further, turning his head just slightly so he could meet her gaze. “Because I wouldn’t be offended if you wanted to join in the fun.”

“Look, if I really wanted to, I would,” she reassured without a hint of uncertainty. “You know me better than that. I don’t pass up on things just to make you feel better, and I don’t expect you to do that kind of thing for me.”

The tip of her tail flicked against his foot, the long appendage coiled neatly around the legs he had drawn up under his chin. “Alright, if you insist.” He leaned down just enough to kiss the ear that was pressed against him, subtly brushing his cheek against its soft, familiar texture.

“If you’re really that concerned, we can always come back later,” she continued, letting her lids flutter shut as she listened to the soft flow of the rhythmic waves breaking on the shore. “Just the two of us. Between you and me, I think I’d like that better. Maybe after dark, when everything’s calm and quiet, and we can stroll down the beach and admire the stars.”

“Mmm. I think that sounds like a much better option, too.”

She smiled, drawing ever closer to him, if that was even possible at this point. “Then it’s settled. So just sit back, relax, and enjoy watching the rest of them make fools of themselves.”

“You know we don’t have to be here to do that,” he chuckled, and she gave his side a firm nudge.

“And you know what I meant. Honestly, do you like arguing? Because it seems like you take every opportunity you get to--”

He kissed her swiftly, discreetly, just enough to distract her before she could completely start going off. He smoothed her raised fur with a few pats, giving her with a sincere smile that had become one of her favorite and most cherished sights in the world. “Not arguing, just…making conversation. And unfortunately most of the ways I’m used to making conversation happen to lead to a dispute, I guess.”

“I suppose I can let it slide,” she conceded, hoping he didn’t notice her involuntary blush. But, in truth, there was never really any hiding it from him. “Maybe I’m too quick to jump to conclusions. The heat must be getting to me.”

“Sounds like you’re the one that really needs to relax, then,” he mused with a raised brow, gently massaging the tip of her ear where his lips had left off.

Her eyes absently strayed to his chest, catching a glimpse of the angry scar he’d previously been so adamant about hiding, intent to pretend it didn’t exist. It seemed that he’d come to accept it more over time, or if nothing else he’d simply grown weary of always having to be so alert and on guard about it. The latter prospect wasn’t really his style, so all she could hope was that he really had come to better terms with that particularly disturbing phase of his past.

If he could sit here with her like this now, and smile and kiss her and pet her ears, she supposed he must have made at least some progress. That brought a pleased smile to her lips, but more than that, the fact that he’d come to feel so at ease in her presence was the truly remarkable thing. She would sit here with him like this forever if he wanted, and she knew despite the odds that he was likely to do the same. With him by her side and the soft sounds of the ocean filling her ears, she realized she didn’t have a care in the world at the moment, and that was another miracle she was sure she’d never stop being grateful for.
