Summary: Everyone needs some downtime every now and again, and what better way is there to relax than by taking a break with the one you love?

Author’s Note: Once again I feel like this fic doesn’t necessarily have enough action in it, but it’s got too much dialogue to be a more reflective piece…hopefully I’ll get my balance reconfigured eventually orz either way, I’ve actually had the idea for this fic for awhile, ever since I got an espresso machine in game. I got it pretty early on in my playthrough, and ofc my first thought was “omg I could make Raymond coffee with this :D it’d be so cute!” and thus this piece was born lol. I also threw in some encouragement for myself bcuz I finally unlocked terraforming a few days ago but it’s been…quite an ordeal, and I’m having that whole “island envy” situation where I just feel like everything I do isn’t good enough. This piece is simple but I like it anyway, and I hope you enjoy!

The sound of the espresso machine clicking off snapped Nova out of her reverie. She was leaning against the counter with her arms crossed, facing the contraption as it worked its alleged magic before her. She’d let her mind wander, thoughts idly straying this way and that as she waited for it to finish preparing the steaming beverage. She usually didn’t have a lot to think about, but with all the recent island renovations and upgrades, she’d had her hands full planning and placing and rearranging things. The smell of it wafted through the air, filling the kitchen with its heavenly, mouth watering aroma; but she knew that the taste didn’t quite fit its misleading and magnificent scent. If it could soak into the walls, she would have been grateful…she supposed getting a candle was probably the next best thing.

The young cat wasn’t really one for the taste of coffee, or any of its plentiful varieties, but that wasn’t who she’d prepared this cup for, anyway. She removed the steaming mug with as much care as possible, wincing as she accidentally touched one of the hot sides in the process of grasping its smooth handle. Luckily, she hadn’t managed to drop it (yet…) and she carried it with much more confidence as she made her way into the living room.

Raymond was busy typing away on the couch, working on something that she was sure would have gone way over her head if she asked him to explain. She would have listened, of course, and even been interested in his no doubt complex and confusing elucidation. But, unfortunately for her, interest and comprehension are two separate things, and she knew she was severely lacking in the latter when it came to almost anything technical that her partner endeavored to share. He did his best to make his explanations as simple and straightforward as possible, which she appreciated immensely, but for the most part she figured it was best if she just played along…even when said explanations were hopelessly lost on her. It made him happy to talk about such things, and that was reason enough for her to indulge him without complaint.

“You really should take a break,” she urged as she settled on the couch next to him, nudging the drink in his direction. “I made your favorite, so do you think you can at least stop long enough to take a few sips? It won’t be as good if you wait until it gets cold.”

“Are you really so determined to sabotage my work?” he teased as he removed his glasses, rubbing his eyes. “I suppose I should just say thank you, though, since you went through all the trouble to do this for me.”

“Well, first off, it wasn’t really any trouble at all,” she replied, passing him the cup as he gestured for it. “And you know that, you just like making fun of me. I know I have a hard time figuring out how kitchen stuff works, but even someone like me can manage to work a coffee machine.”

“And you do it so wonderfully,” he agreed with a chuckle, and she playfully shoved his shoulder in retaliation.

“And--” she continued emphatically, “I’m not sabotaging anything. Taking a break isn’t going to ruin anything you’ve done, or anything you will do. If anyone’s going to interrupt you from doing something, it should be me, anyway. Since I know what it’s like to get so caught up in what you’re doing that you end up working on it until your eyes want to fall out of your face.”

“I appreciate you worrying about me,” he replied with genuine gratitude, blowing some of the steam away as he took a tentative sip. “And you really do make it just the way I like it, so thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Surely you’d just keep doing whatever you did before,” she mused as she shifted closer, resting her head on his shoulder as he sat back into the cushions.

“To be honest, I think it tasted more bland when I was making it for myself,” he remarked, taking another sip.

“I guess I’ll just have to keep making it for you, then,” she replied, taking his free hand into her own. “After you’re done, is there anything specific you want to do today?”

“Hm…I’d like to see some of the new areas you’ve been working on later, if you don’t mind showing me,” he proposed, peeking down at her. “I haven’t seen the full extent of your work firsthand, but I know you’ve been moving and rearranging and making things like mad, so the least I can do is take some time to appreciate all your hard work.”

“You spoil me,” she lamented dramatically, burrowing even closer against him. “But it really does mean a lot that you want to take the time to see it, more than I can really say. It’s so frustrating sometimes, getting things to look just right, and working around all the constraints and obstacles that never seem to give me a break.”

“It sounds like maybe you need to take one too, then,” he replied, quirking up an eyebrow as she raised her head to meet his eyes. “You do still get carried away with trying to get everything done in one day. But it’s a whole island, you know? With a lot of different areas, and you keep adding more, and trying to make things look complex and intricate and unique. All of us are lucky to have someone that’s so dedicated and motivated to put things together, and make it all look nice on top of that, but even you won’t be able to enjoy it if you burn yourself out.”

“Do you ever get tired of being right about everything?” Nova huffed, poking his cheek. “But I guess it’s good to hear those words out loud sometimes…so thank you. Right now we can just keep taking a break together…how does that sound?”

He smiled, nuzzling her ear as he drew her even closer. “That works for me.”
