Summary: Even when she finds herself cornered in a Palace, Witch can still rely on him without having to wonder or worry.
*Author’s Note*: A random short little thing, idk what’s up with me and getting myself in risky situations during Palace infiltrations lol. Good thing Ren’s always there to pick up my slack. I was inspired to write this after that one extremely short shot of Ren using a grappling hook to traverse a Palace in the P5R trailer. Of course my first thought was of him using it to save me…rip. I hope you enjoy!
Danger was staring her in the face, and there wasn’t much she could do to avoid it. Getting herself stuck in such an obvious, stupid position…sometimes she wondered if she had the right to claim she was above being a rookie. Other members of the team made bad decisions from time to time, sure, but when she was the one backed into a corner, she found her blunder impossible to excuse. They may have argued that she was just being too hard on herself, but who was she kidding, none of them made mistakes exactly this terrible. And she was sure that in this case any of them would have managed to find a way out by now, making the most of their experience and resourcefulness. Skills honed with years of execution and practice…just more evidence to support that she wasn’t cut out for this sort of thing.
The Palace guards were closing in on all sides, and her thoughts finally kicked into overdrive. She didn’t want to cause a bigger scene, and she had to avoid complicating the problem at all costs. She had to have something up her sleeve, a tactic she was blanking on that would come to her and solve everything just in the nick of time. The more she searched through her frantic thoughts, the more panicked she became, her mind unwisely losing focus with each second that ticked by. Maybe she could call out to Navi for backup, but her limbs and throat were frozen, and she realized she’d succumbed to the paralysis of terror. The enemies weren’t even that formidable, but the hopelessness their presence nurtured had set in without leaving her any room to fight back.
Sometimes this kind of fear seized her, completely disrupting whatever action she may have been carrying out before. Despite the modest improvements she’d been making in managing such situations, she still couldn’t seem to keep it from happening at all, each instance serving as a reminder that set back her courage and confidence. Summoning her weapon, she struggled valiantly against her self-sabotage to conduct even the simplest distraction, but it seemed that her distress was still too great for her to overcome. Squeezing her eyes shut and attempting to clear her mind long enough to give her the even slightest potential to escape, her voice continued to fail her even as she was suddenly hoisted into the air.
A firm arm latched around her waist and pinned her to his side, and he’d only touched down long enough to ensure he had a secure grip on her. She locked her arms around him out of reflex, refusing to open her eyes until her feet were reunited with the ground. She heard the sound of his grappling device winding up with an automatic whir as they completed their light landing, a flawless display that he conducted with envious ease. Her legs were still shaking as she adjusted to returning to solid ground, pushing herself to calm down and accept the fact that things were okay now. He’d saved her once again, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about that, but what she was sure of was her gratitude. Eventually she raised her head, examining his unreadable expression with misty eyes. His posture was stiff, and his attention was obviously spread thin, but he held himself together long enough to ensure she was really alright.
“You aren’t hurt, are you?”
“Other than my pride? I guess not.” She shrugged. “I can fill you in on the details later. Right now, we need to focus on meeting up with the others—”
“We’re not going anywhere until you give me a straight answer.”
With an exasperated huff she summoned her Persona, casting a simple healing spell over them both before granting his request. “Even if I was, I’m not now. I’m fine. We’re both fine, but clearly you have something more urgent on your mind, so let’s not waste any more time just standing around.”
He sighed and forced his shoulders to relax, enveloping her in an unexpectedly heartfelt hug. “Yeah, we do need to get out of here. But nothing’s ever more important than making sure you’re okay.”
Her laugh was mostly humorous as she gave him a quick hug in return. “I feel the same, but I can tell the wanted level in here is precarious right now, and you were only able to come back for me because you’re sentimental like that. And skilled enough to risk it. You can do as much doting as you want after we get back to some real safety, alright?”
She felt kind of silly encouraging him in such a way, but her words seemed to satisfy whatever’d been feeding his reluctance. Checking that the coast was clear, he gestured for her to follow his lead as he snuck off down another corridor, one that she swore they’d passed through at least once before. That was a good sign; retracing their steps generally meant they were heading in the right direction. Even if they got off track, she trusted him enough to know nothing would stop him from successfully navigating a way out. He was capable enough to free her from a pack of looming Shadows without even needing to engage them. But also, in her eyes, he’d always been capable of overcoming anything.
