Summary: After a bad day, what better way is there to unwind than finding solace in the arms of a dear friend.

Author’s Note: This is a fic I’ve been meaning to write for a while orz digging into the drafts is always such an ordeal lol. Anyway, the first time I saw this scene in BNA it made me want to lose my mind because I couldn’t believe Shirou could be so RUDE but that’s okay I forgive him lol. I don’t even remember if there was a specific vent thing I was writing this fic for in the first place, either, so now I guess the conflict doesn’t really matter. The point is, from the beginning of this ship I’ve seen Shirou and Nova as the type to act the same way around each other whether they’re in a platonic or romantic relationship. I mean, they kiss more and hold hands when they’re dating, but. They feel comfortable enough around each other to just be chill and intimate like this at any point, so I decided to write a fic to show that dynamic off a little. Thank you for reading!

“Luna, you home?”

Slamming the door shut behind her with a resolute click, it was clear by every aspect of her appearance that Nova was perturbed. Slipping her shoes off one at a time before tossing them in the usual spot, they clattered noisily against the hard floor. Any number of things could have been the catalyst for her less than amiable mood, but at this point the cause wasn’t really that important. How she reacted, what she did with these feelings now was the real issue, and she didn’t really know how to deal with them. She struggled to spare them any significant thought, focusing instead on how they affected her, how frustrated and stressed out and all around bad they made her feel.

“Luna--?”

“She’s not home.”

Nova’s ears perked up at the unexpected voice that greeted her. Although it was much deeper and less welcoming than she’d expected, it was still familiar to her. Unfortunately, she wasn’t quite sure she was properly equipped to deal with this particular man at the moment. He sounded a little irritated himself…perhaps she’d disturbed him, barged in while he was taking a nap or something. In that case, the fault obviously resided with him, especially since she’d had no way of knowing he was going to be here in the first place.

Doing a quick sweep of the living room, she found the light haired Beastman she knew so well lounging across the couch like it was the most natural thing in the world. Well, here lately she supposed it had been, and neither she nor her roommate had much of an issue with his presence. On the contrary, Shirou had been proving his usefulness in a variety of ways, but of course the young women didn’t want him to think they were keen on taking advantage of his arbitrary hospitality.

“Shoes. Off the couch. Now,” Nova huffed as she approached, dislodging his feet from where they were propped up on the arm of the sofa. “How many times do I have to tell you this? I can’t stand seeing you all sprawled out with your fucking shoes on the furniture. You may be a Beastman, but emphasis on the “man” part, in this case. As in, human, or at least decent enough--”

“Are you just looking for an excuse to angrily lecture someone?” Shirou countered, pushing himself up on his arms. He raked his hand through his hair a few times, obviously trying to shake off any vestiges of the fog that still lingered in his brain following his short and abruptly interrupted snooze. “You’re barely through the door and already going off on me like--”

“Excuse you, the door was closed before I even started speaking,” she corrected sharply. “And my ranting has nothing to do with anything but being sick of dealing with your bad habits.”

Taking matters into her own hands, and without waiting for any argument or complaints on his end, Nova yanked his boots off one by one without a word and set them down beside her own. “See, is it really so hard to just leave them by the door?”

“So, are you going to tell me what you’re really so pissed off about?” Shirou continued bluntly, sitting up just enough to allow himself a proper stretch. “Because this one thing can’t have been enough to set you off like this.”

“Oh, you wanna bet?” Nova rejoined, but Shirou just watched her with a patient, unwavering expression.

“Come on, just tell me about it,” Shirou urged with an air of indifference, boredom. Like this was all just part of some tired routine he was eager to move through a little more economically than they were. “You can fill Luna in later, but if you sit on it, it’s just going to make you more miserable.”

“Like I don’t already know that,” the feline Beastman replied, running a tired hand through her own locks. “I don’t…really wanna talk about it--”

“Alright, then quit criticizing me and get over here.”

Settling back into the same position she’d found him in, Shirou waited calmly for Nova to follow his request. Dropping her purse on the table that served as the centerpiece of the room, she plopped down on the edge of one of the couch cushions, pinning her hands between her legs. Now that the distraction of his minor infraction had passed, the weight of the emotions that she was pathetically attempting to keep at bay returned, seemingly redoubling their efforts to bother her. She sighed, ears pressed flat against her head as she stared blankly ahead, retreating inside herself in the hopes that she could somehow manage to lock any further outbursts away.

“Sorry for yelling at you,” she muttered weakly, and Shirou pulled her down without hesitation.

“You can make it up to me by not yelling at me any more…today, anyway,” he replied, nestling her head against his chest.

The young woman yelped, caught off guard and off balance by his sudden gesture, but she made no attempt to free herself from his hold. Both of them knew this was where things were headed, anyway; it was just part of the routine. Whenever either of them had a particularly bad day, or were just seeking some sort of comfort, they tended to default to a scenario like this. Nova snuggled up against his torso, cradled in his arms, purring softly as she was soothed by the mere influence of his consoling presence. Shirou was content to hold her like this, to know she was here, safe with him, far removed from whatever unpleasantness had managed to put her in such a disagreeable state of mind.

“I’m sorry you had a bad day,” he murmured as he played with her hair, fingers lazily and almost instinctively weaving through her wavy tresses.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you. Again,” she mumbled in return, closing her eyes as she succumbed to his comforting gesture. “But, seriously, you’ve got to keep your shoes off the couch. Please. For my sake, for the sake of my sanity--”

“I’ll only make promises when it comes to this house, alright?” he conceded, drawing a reluctant chuckle out of both of them.

“Fine. I guess that’ll just have to be good enough for now,” she assented, focusing on the beat of his heart as a fresh silence settled over them.
